We helped families affected by a fire whose homes had burned down.

We provided complete home furnishings and everyday essentials to families in Eger whose homes were recently completely destroyed in a devastating fire. We had previously provided non-perishable food packages as emergency aid to those in need, and now we have offered assistance in the form of furniture and household items essential for starting over.

Our primary mission is to provide regular food assistance to those in need. In Eger and the surrounding area, we provide hot meals to approximately 750 people every day, while the „Like a loaf of bread”As part of a nationwide program, we provide families in difficult circumstances living in smaller rural communities with non-perishable food and other essential assistance. While the purchase and delivery of household furnishings is not part of our usual scope of work, when we learned that this was what families affected by the fire needed most, our volunteers joined forces, sourced donations, and then transported them from another county to Eger.

The donation included furnishings for an entire apartment: a crib, a bookshelf, wardrobes, a kitchen table, and chairs; in addition, the families received dressers, a space heater, a hair dryer, a chandelier, a large quantity of clothing, and a cell phone.

Since the fire destroyed all their household items, we also provided them with the essentials for daily life. The donation package included a toaster, a kettle, a food processor, cookware, cutlery, plates, and numerous other household items.

At the same time, we believe that Starting over isn't just about furniture and household items, which is why we felt it was important for the new home to be not only furnished, but also comfortable, livable, and cozy. That’s why the donation also included gifts that can bring warmth and a sense of home back into these families’ lives: books, wall art, toys, decorative items, flowers, and home accessories. These items convey the message that a home is made up not only of walls, but also of hope, love, and new memories.

„After a devastating fire in the Rudivár neighborhood destroyed the homes and nearly all the personal belongings of three families—a total of 13 people, including seven minor children—we were the first to rush to their aid with a package of non-perishable food. It later became clear that the greatest help they needed now was furnishing a new home, so we contacted our organization’s headquarters.” – said Olivér Nyolcas, our office manager in Eger.

„When everything is lost in a matter of minutes—your home, your furniture, your clothes, your family mementos, and even the smallest items necessary for daily life—then help is no longer just a donation, but a chance to start a new life. In times of trouble, it’s especially important that no one is left alone. We believe that every act of help can be a new, happier beginning for those in need. That is why there was no question in our minds that we would organize the collection as part of our „Like a Piece of Bread” program and then transport the donations from Pest County to Eger.”– said Attila Szanyi-Karl, our national leader.

We have been providing social services in Hungary for more than three decades. We firmly believe that the assistance we provide must always be tailored to current needs—whether that means providing a hot meal each day, emergency aid, or support to help a family get back on its feet.
