At our Foundation's Christmas event, Balázs Bús, the Mayor of Budapest, personally offered lunch to the needy residents!
The Meals for Life Foundation held its district Christmas food distribution in Óbuda, in the green area in front of the „Faluház” on Vörösvári road. Through our centre in Csillaghegy, we consider it very important to help the needy in our own district, in the immediate vicinity of our headquarters. With our event we would also like to set an example that if everyone helps in their own backyard, we can fight poverty and vulnerability more effectively.
The food distribution in Óbuda was open to people who were selected by the district's Family Support Service on the basis of their social situation. However, in the context of the special Christmas action, people who are not registered with the service could also join the queue. All that was asked of the participants was to be patient and wait in line. We know that this is a demanding task in the cold, freezing weather.
The food distribution in Óbuda was particularly well attended by large families with many children, and a surprisingly large number of people brought their children, because, as they say, they have no one to entrust them to for the duration of the distribution. Around 28 volunteers took part in the operation, with the help of the Family Support Service and the Social Department of the Municipality - an exemplary team effort. Balázs Bús, the Mayor of Óbuda-Békásmegyer Municipality, distributed a fresh hot lunch to the residents, and spent about 2 hours in the programme himself.
The mission was also supported by small and large companies and local residents, and thanks to their help, the participants received an extremely rich food package of quality branded food along with the hot meal, Székely cabbage. Lettuce, cocktail tomatoes, radishes, various fruits (bananas, tangerines, oranges, apples), sweets (chocolate bars, muesli bars, chocolate eggs) for the children, toys for the little ones and clothes for the parents were also distributed. It was a touching and exemplary case when, after seeing the distribution, local residents brought down their children's toys that had become redundant. In this way, everyone did their bit to help those in need.
