„It’s carnival time here…”—as the song goes, we bid farewell to winter. During Carnival in Mohács, the traditional Busó dancers burn winter on a bonfire, driving away the year’s gloomy, frosty season. Not far from here lies Pécs, Hungary’s fifth-largest city. Its population numbers more than 150,000. One of our foundation’s most active volunteer teams, led by Zsuzsanna Kollár, operates here and in the city of Győr. Their enthusiastic work is marked by numerous food distribution drives. Their efforts are aimed at large families in need and people with mild disabilities. Working hand in hand with staff from the local family support agency, they identify those most in need.

During this year’s Carnival, more than 100 servings of hot meals were distributed. Most of the participants were members of the Mátyás Éltes Unified Special Education Methodology Institute, Special Vocational School, and Boarding School, as well as individuals from EFESZI (people with mild intellectual disabilities). However, meals were also provided to families who did not come from these institutions. Sixteen meals were delivered to those in need at a nursing home for the homeless. The menu consisted of the tried-and-true green pea stew with homemade cheese and tomatoes, bread, and halava with forest berries (a sweet dish made with butter and semolina).

Their Carnival food distribution was met with great satisfaction. Smiles, warmth, kind words, and generous hearts—these are the hallmarks of their work. The participants shared that even the weather was kind during the distribution, and for a few brief moments the sun came out, dispelling the gloom of the winter days. This is how we bid farewell to winter.
