Once again this year, we’re coming together to help those in need with the Christmas Charity Dinner

"Food for Life," the food distribution and humanitarian service run by devotees of Krishna, helps Hungary's needy population year after year amid a succession of crises.

„More people are asking for our food packages now than ever before, since we have to pay 30-50% more for the same basic groceries at the store this year than we did a year ago!” – says Attila Szanyi-Karl, the foundation’s director.

Families who have no financial reserves whatsoever and whose income hovers around the minimum wage—living from month to month—are the most vulnerable to the crisis. Poverty in urban and rural areas takes on entirely different forms. While in rural areas, unemployment or even getting to welfare offices is the biggest problem—and heating a single-family home is a significant expense—urban poverty has a completely different face. If residents own their own homes, they’re still in a relatively good position; if they have to pay rent, it can take up as much as 80–90% of their income. At the food distributions organized by the Food for Life Foundation, there are an increasing number of working, average-income people in need who, after covering their basic expenses, can no longer afford to buy the necessary food, and are finding it increasingly difficult to pay their rising utility bills.

People choose the “Food for Life” service because they know they’ll receive fresh, vegetarian meals that are nutritious and plentiful, and they can take home baked goods, fruits, vegetables, and other items as well..

The Food for Life Foundation works year-round to provide hot meals and food items in good condition—sourced from food rescue efforts—to those in need. Each year, they provide assistance in the form of half a million servings of hot meals and several hundred metric tons of non-perishable food, at five distribution points in the capital, as well as in Somogy County, Eger, and Debrecen. The Christmas Feast of Love, which has been organized in Hungary by Krishna devotees for three decades now, is expected to welcome 6,000 people nationwide! Every year, celebrities, athletes, and artists join the event. Krishna devotees offer their volunteer services on this day. They can no longer imagine Christmas any other way: „The bejgli and the festive treats on the table are waiting for us,” they say. Christmas is made complete by bringing joy to the lives of thousands of people on this celebration of love.

Food for Life is currently working on the construction of a new building complex, where a larger kitchen and additional cooking stoves would ensure an increase in food distribution capacity. They are hoping for the generous support of donors for both this development project and the Christmas Charity Banquet.
