The Food for Life Foundation, the food assistance program of the Krishna Consciousness Community, has been involved in providing aid to the homeless in need in our country, and will continue to do so in the future, regardless of the circumstances. We have been collaborating with the Budapest Methodological Social Center and its Institutions (BMSZKI) since 2016. We have been delivering lunch to them six days a week, providing 600 meals daily. The “Food for Life” Foundation has also been made aware of the challenges involved in providing daily meals and care for the homeless in the capital. Our foundation was asked to help provide meals to their institutions, various homeless shelters, hospitals, and temporary housing facilities with an increased number of meals in the future. As a result, we now provide 892 hot meals daily to BMSZKI facilities alone across 16 locations, and this number is expected to continue to grow in the future, alongside the operation of our other food distribution programs.
Starting April 1, together with other shelters and homes—including one of the facilities run by the Menhely Foundation mentioned in the article—we will deliver a total of 1120 meals to 21 locations on weekdays, on weekdays, while also ensuring that our regular distribution points are supplied.
Nationwide, Food for Life distributes approximately 3,000 meals a day to those in need. In Budapest, four of the five distribution centers operate under agreements with district municipalities, while the Népliget distribution point functions as a community kitchen that anyone can visit immediately as a form of emergency aid if they need food to survive—we warmly welcome you. Visitors receive a hot lunch, tea, baked goods, and fruits and vegetables salvaged from food waste every weekday at noon, next to the old Planetarium building.
On April 22, in celebration of Earth Day, we’re also organizing a special spring food package distribution; on that day, we’ll be welcoming seniors and families in need at Almássy Square. The generous food packages received here will allow those who come to cook for a longer period of time. We hope that through the work of Food for Life, we can continue to contribute to the well-being and security of the Hungarian people and society.
