33 Years in the Fight Against Poverty

Ever since humanity has existed, the distribution of resources has never been equal. Some people have always received less, while others have received disproportionately more. Today, 735 million people worldwide are going hungry, a dramatic increase from the 160 million in 2014. 😔 Humanity’s wastefulness and excessive consumption contribute greatly to this situation.

According to UNICEF, the current global situation is pushing us toward famine on a scale not seen since World War II. As an Indian proverb says: „The grain of rice you leave on your plate may later cause hunger.”

The Situation in Hungary 🇭🇺

According to EUROSTAT data from 2023, 2.5 to 3 million people in our country are struggling to make ends meet. 45% of these people do not have sufficient income to meet their daily needs, while many are unable to afford even basic food items.

The Widespread Nature of Food Shortages

Poverty is everywhere. 👀 We often look away from the gazes of those begging, but more and more people are finding themselves in difficult situations. Our foundation strives to help those in need as a community initiative. Our goal is to build healthy social cohesion.

Our Goals

For 33 years, our foundation has been working to reduce hunger and deprivation in Hungary. Our main goal is to provide hot, fresh meals to those in need, whether they are families, people on small pensions, or homeless individuals.

We regularly distribute food six days a week at five locations in Budapest and in four towns outside the city. In our kitchens, we offer 33–34 different Hungarian-style dishes that everyone loves. We also provide fruit, vegetables, and baked goods to accompany our meals, made possible through our partnership with the Hungarian Food Bank.

Cleanliness in the kitchen is especially important to us, as we treat the kitchen as a sacred place. Cleanliness, care, and love characterize every meal we provide to those in need.

The Influence of Our Traditions and the Desire to Help

We don’t just serve food—we bless the dishes according to our traditions before serving them. Many of our guests remark that there’s something special about the food—perhaps it’s the love we put into preparing it. 💖

The spirit of helping others is contagious! Many of our regular volunteers also deliver food to people who, for one reason or another, are unable to make it to the distribution sites. A sick neighbor, an elderly friend—all of this demonstrates the strength of our community.

Prevention and Community Participation

Food distribution not only provides physical nourishment but also fosters social connections. For older adults, this is often the only opportunity to be in the company of others and not spend their days alone. Human connections are essential for both physical and mental health.

In Népliget, we regularly meet people who have managed to pull themselves out of difficult situations, and they, too, share their stories with us. ✨ A little help can go a long way, and it can help those who have been struggling for a long time feel valued and important again.
