Christmas Feast of Love: Krishna devotees distribute food and hope in Eger
This year, nearly 750 people in need are looking forward to the Krishna devotees’ Christmas Feast of Love. As part of the Food for Life Mission, a special event will take place on December 14: along with lunch, packages containing non-perishable foods, cooking ingredients, and holiday treats, as well as clothing and toys, will be distributed to those in need.
The Krishna devotees behind this charitable event have been committed to social welfare for several decades. Every weekday of the year, they regularly distribute 700–750 servings of hot meals in Eger and the surrounding area to socially disadvantaged people. On an annual basis, this amounts to nearly 180,000 meals, which provides substantial and significant assistance to families, retirees, and single individuals.
„Our goal is to ease the burden on those in need and help them get through those difficult times when even the most basic expenses are nearly out of reach. Our program provides people not only with food, but also with hope.” – emphasized Péter Mikuska, the Eger coordinator of the Hare Krishna Food for Life Mission.
The menu for Saturday’s Love Feast will consist of vegetarian bean stew with vegetables, fresh bread, and pastries, all of which will be served with dedication by volunteers. In addition to the hot meal, the 2.2 metric tons of donations collected by the Hungarian Food Bank in Eger in November will be supplemented with at least ten types of non-perishable food items. These packages are especially valuable for struggling households that have nothing to set aside, even as the holidays approach.
„For many families, these food packages form the basis of their Christmas dinner or provide a reserve for the period between the holidays, when less assistance is available. We often see that in the winter, expenses for medication and heating leave no money for food, so this donation package can be a real lifeline.” – the coordinator added.
The festive event will be held on December 14, starting at 11:00 a.m., at the distribution center on Tűzoltó Square, for registered guests of the Haré Krishna Food for Life program in Eger.
„The volunteers” enthusiasm is also very moving: in response to our call, a team came together in barely 30 minutes, consisting of helpers from all age groups. This coming together proves that the power of the community is still immense and capable of bringing about real change in people’s lives.” – Péter Mikuska pointed out.
Anyone who would like to contribute to helping those in need can donate 1,500 forints to provide one meal or 10,000 forints to provide a complete Christmas package for a family on our website’s homepage.
A bowl of food, a big dose of care—that’s what Krishna-conscious devotees are offering to the most vulnerable once again this year. The event is not just a food distribution, but a symbolic gesture: a celebration of human dignity and hope.
