A level of poverty we cannot even imagine

On the last day of March, we visited Lyukóvölgy, a small village near Miskolc. We delivered hot meals, bread, assorted vegetables, rice, dried pasta, canned goods, cookies, non-alcoholic soft drinks, and chocolate milk to 70 families, totaling 349 people.
We organized the food distribution, in collaboration with the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service, specifically for people living in segregated communities.
Lyukóvölgy is the site of a former coal mine that is now home to one of the poorest segments of the population in the country. Members of the community live without water and, in many places, without electricity, in old, abandoned miners’ houses and homes made from dilapidated buildings, with some households numbering more than ten people.
The community is led by Levente Garbóczy, who runs a support center in the local community center. Their goal is to support local residents in need from birth through working age. Currently, there is a tutoring center and an after-school development center on site, as well as a public bathhouse where everyone—from the youngest children to young adults—is welcome. Sister Ágnes of the Franciscan Order and her colleagues are dedicated to helping the local residents who are in need.
It was very inspiring for us, too, to work toward a common goal, regardless of denomination or religious affiliation.
The organization regularly receives donations from the Hungarian Food Bank network, but in the absence of an official soup kitchen service and kitchen facilities, the distribution of hot meals is currently not feasible, which is why we plan to continue our collaborative efforts in the future so that we can support even more families facing severe crises.
