Food distribution started every day in Eger

Our Egri Office now provides over 100 000 rations a year to local people in need.

In 2013, our Foundation's goal is to help people in need in more and more places in the countryside, in addition to the regular food distributions in Budapest. Northern Hungary has a particularly heavy social burden, and our organisation wants to play its part in solving this problem. Average monthly earnings in this region are lower than in the rest of the country, and the economic crisis and falling demand have led to job losses and an increase in the number of unemployed. While nationally the unemployment rate increased to 11%, the unemployment rate in Northern Hungary rose to 16% by December 2010, according to the KSH. Our Egri Office, established in 1999, implements the Foundation's life-saving objectives in this socially disadvantaged region, in cooperation with local care providers and local government bodies.

IMG_2277While the local group distributed nearly 7,000 hot meals in 2012, this amount will be increased tenfold in 2013. The expansion is justified by growing demand. In a demographically ageing area with low economic potential, there are many pensioners, the long-term unemployed and large families in crisis, who cannot even afford to buy basic daily food. Our Foundation aims to help these families and elderly people in this impossible situation by providing them with food solutions to help them pay for other expenses and settle their outstanding debts.

Every weekday, our volunteers in Eger distribute 300 portions of fresh, hot meals and bread, possibly accompanied by fruit and sweets. Those in need will be informed of the opportunity by the local family support worker and will be able to take their lunch home in a barrel to share with their family.. We also place a strong emphasis on the role of communal meals in keeping families together, even though for many this is their only meal of the day.

In addition to the regular food distribution, our volunteers in Eger are also planning special long-weekend activities in 2013. The regular meals started on 18 March, supported by local volunteers, a vegetarian restaurant and small businesses, but also by the 1% from the public and government grants received by the Foundation.
