On May 19, we held a special food drive in Békéscsaba. Thanks to numerous local donors and a kind-hearted local resident who helped with a special donation, we were able to give our guests truly bountiful packages, and they were very happy. The pleasant summer weather and plenty of delicious treats turned Saturday into a true celebration of joy.

A total of 110 food packages were prepared, containing, among other things, oil, flour, rice, semolina, pasta, sugar, and powdered sugar, canned goods, and tomato juice, but also included apples, chocolate, soft drinks, and sauerkraut—with careful attention paid to the balance of useful cooking ingredients, healthy components, and snacks and treats that children would enjoy. Many of the ingredients were brought from Budapest to Békéscsaba, and the musical Children’s Day program was provided by volunteers from Békéscsaba and Szolnok using Indian instruments. This day was the result of a true collaborative effort!

We welcomed a total of 198 guests, most of whom were children. Our local volunteers always complement the distribution of food packages with a buffet-style meal and a short musical program for the children. The table was set with pizza, bananas, chocolate, soft drinks with straws, and Gauranga cookies. Our guests included students from the local special education institution living in difficult circumstances, families residing in temporary housing, young students from the foster care home, as well as other needy families in Békéscsaba.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our volunteers in Békéscsaba, Budapest, and Szolnok for their wonderful, exemplary service!

But that wasn’t the only thing that happened over the weekend; we also hold a food distribution every Sunday in Debrecen, and on Saturday the 27th, we will be welcoming those in need at Garay Square in the 7th district as part of an ecumenical initiative.
