Flood Report 2013

As requested by the State Secretariat for Church, Nationality and Civil Society Relations of the Ministry of Human Resources in a circular letter, Hungarian churches and NGOs - as well as the Food for Life Foundation itself - have tried to help the flood relief efforts to the best of their abilities.

Our foundation, which serves nearly 2,000 hot lunches a day to the most vulnerable in our society nationwide, has turned its attention to feeding the relief workers and displaced population during this year's flooding, the highest ever in the Danube. In cooperation with and under the coordination of the National Directorate General for Disaster Management and the Hungarian Red Cross, as a member of the National Humanitarian Coordination Council responsible for the distribution of donations and assisting in the response, we supported the response efforts in Budapest, in several municipalities of Pest County and in Baranya County.

Our volunteers joined the cooperation on 6 June 2013 and were available to the experts until 18 June, including the demolition phase after the flood wave had receded. During this period, thousands of meals of fresh, nutritious hot lunch and fruit were provided daily to support the work of the police, firefighters, customs officers, vigilantes, water officers, coordinators and civilian volunteers involved in the response. In total, we delivered food to more than 10 different settlements in the Danube Region, including the most critical locations. A detailed list of our activities can be found below:

Our colleagues personally distributed the food at each site, where the presence of our professionals also provided psychosocial support to the professional staff.

It was a pleasure and an uplifting feeling to be part of this joint work that mobilised the whole country. As in the past, as well as on this occasion, our organisation will continue to guarantee the cooperation that is needed in times of difficulty for the country.

We would like to thank all our supporters for their contributions!
