We now also provide emotional support during our traditional Easter Monday food distribution. Our foundation helps 1,600 people; we begin serving lunch and food packages at 11 a.m. at Blaha Lujza Square in Budapest.
Our foundation was established in 1999 by the Hungarian Society for Krishna Consciousness. Even at the time of our registration, we had already been regularly distributing food in the capital for a decade, as caring for the needy is an integral part of our faith. Even from the very beginning of our charitable activities, we placed great emphasis on building personal relationships with those in need and providing them with spiritual support, as all of our volunteers were also practicing ministers. This special attention and dedication have characterized our two-decade history in Hungary. In accordance with religious traditions, we always bless the food we distribute, which is why we pay close attention to its quality and cleanliness. However, food is not everything; we consider the sense of care to be at least as important as the food the participants receive. Nutrition and care work together to help steer someone’s life back onto a traditional path.
Our foundation has now grown into a nationwide organization; our volunteers distribute more than half a million servings of hot meals and several hundred metric tons of non-perishable food each year throughout the country. However, there is a constant need to expand our services.
At the special Easter food distribution on April 17, those waiting in line will once again receive a generous package containing 22 types of non-perishable food items to go with their hot lunch, which helps families stock up, prepare additional meals, and save money. Service begins at 11 a.m., but we start distributing wristbands as early as 9 a.m. The assistance is provided to people in need who are unable—either temporarily or permanently—to care for themselves. These include the elderly, parents with young children, the unemployed, people with limited mobility, and the sick. Poverty has almost endless faces. Experience shows that, at almost any age and in any life situation, a person can find themselves in an existential crisis through no fault of their own. Moreover, for many families, the four-day Easter holiday is all about survival. Some are struggling to make ends meet, and others are literally starving during the holidays—as the people we serve tell our staff every day at our food distributions in City Park and throughout the district.
Spiritual Care with Professionals and Pastors
Life situations that are often hopeless and truly devoid of even a glimmer of hope wound people’s souls the most; above all, they undermine their sense of security. The situation is made even worse by the fact that during the holidays, the mass media is flooded with content that refers to pleasures, abundance, delicacies, and family joy; yet for those in need, this stands in stark contrast to their reality, leading to inner tension. And those who have naturally been raised to take responsibility for themselves, to work, and to be diligent most often feel ashamed of their desperate situation and hide it. Despite the loss of their inner peace of mind, these people do everything in their power to ensure that the weight of their burdens remains hidden from outsiders. Yet loneliness, a sense of hopelessness, and a complete lack of security are wearing them down from within.
Our foundation aims to do more than just distribute food to help those in need; in addition to our usual food assistance, we are therefore organizing this event with the participation of spiritual counselors and Emotional Support Tent We also strive to ease the emotional burdens of those in our care. This is because the psychological and mental effects of poverty can lead to bad habits and ingrained behaviors that may even hinder reintegration into society. This is why we aim to provide an even more comprehensive and effective service at our food distributions.
