The staff of the Food for Life Foundation, the humanitarian program of the Krishna-conscious devotees, are committed to always helping those in need. Their motto is that there should be no hungry people within a 10-kilometer radius of Krishna temples. This is why it is so important to Krishna devotees to look out for their fellow human beings in need not only in the capital and other major cities, but also in the Somogy region, near Krishna Valley.
The Food for Life Foundation does not only distribute meals in Somogy at Christmas: it serves hot lunches to local residents in need every weekday. They deliver 130 meals to Marcal, 70 to Kéthely, and 35 to Horvátkút every day. In light of the holidays, during Christmas week, they also present the regular recipients of the food distribution with a generous food package. In Kéthely and Horvátkút, the packages are delivered through the local family assistance service, while in Marcali, those in need are expected at the regular distribution point on December 23. In Somogyvámos, following a tradition that has become a local custom and is in keeping with Indian customs and hospitality, the Krisna-völgy Food for Life team will treat the village residents to 500 servings of hot lunch and sweets.
The Krishna devotees hope that this support will help people get through this cold season and, despite rising food and energy prices, bring a little hope and festive spirit into the lives of their guests. Currently, most aid organizations are also facing a huge challenge, as they can only purchase food ingredients and fuel at prices well above the official rate; even though they are engaged in charitable work, so helping those in need requires far more resources than before. Despite this, the organizers are striving to manage their costs and lend a helping hand to those in need who could no longer survive without outside assistance.
The Hare Krishna Christmas Feast series of events began in Hungary more than 30 years ago and has since been held at numerous locations in the capital and throughout the country. This year, in addition to Somogy County, the event will take place in Pécs, Kiskunhalas, Debrecen, Eger, and Szigetvár, and from December 24–26 in Budapest at Népliget, next to the Planetarium.
