Residents of small towns and cities alike are benefiting from this week’s food donations by Krishna devotees—Jászság and Óbuda are the next stops in the pre-holiday food distribution series. They will continue their charitable work in the capital, as well as in Somogy, Heves, and Hajdú-Bihar counties, through Christmas, reaching a total of more than 5,300 people with their gifts.
A population ravaged by crises
The resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic and inflation, which has already exceeded 5%, are making life increasingly difficult for those living on the margins of society. Even people and families who have housing and jobs are not in an easy situation, as economic austerity measures, rising prices, and the resulting hardships are having a significant impact on them as well. However, those impoverished segments of the population—people on small pensions, the unemployed, or those living with chronic illnesses or disabilities—who have only managed to get by with assistance so far, are now even closer to the brink of collapse.
During this year’s Christmas season—once again marred by the pandemic—we can combat the grip of hardship through the combined efforts of private donors and charitable organizations.
Jászapáti-Tiszasüly-Tápiószecső – Donations for Survival
Since 2010, letters asking for help have been arriving continuously from Jászapáti and the surrounding area to the Krishna devotees, in which residents describe their difficult circumstances. This year, however, a Christian pastor reached out to the organizers of the “Food for Life” food program with a request. There are also a large number of disadvantaged families living in that region, where it is a struggle just to ensure that everyone has a bowl of hot food on the table.
On December 7, a holiday charity drive will be held in the gardens of the two prayer houses under the pastor’s care—located in Jászapáti and Tiszasüly— where food packages containing sugar, flour, oil, chocolate, and other useful staples will be distributed to 50 families in each location. The “Food for Life” van will also stop in Tápiószecső along the way, where it is slowly becoming a tradition to present the local retirees, as well as the village’s low-income families with essential groceries.

Food and Package Distribution in Óbuda
The “Food for Life” program organized by the Krishna devotees, together with the Óbuda Family Counseling and Child Protection Center, will hold a special food distribution event on December 11 in front of the Faluház on Flórián Square. The Óbuda-Békásmegyer Municipal Government itself has contributed financial support to this holiday event. In addition to the more than half a million hot meals distributed daily—as is customary on weekdays—this holiday-themed event will include 800 servings of baked goods, fruit donations, fresh hot meals, and a food package consisting of 12–13 types of non-perishable items (including, of course, Christmas treats to bring smiles to the children’s faces) will brighten the holidays for those in need.

Among Budapest’s districts, Óbuda has stood out for more than a decade for its exemplary social welfare efforts. In the district, the humanitarian organization of the Krishna devotees, the Food for Life Foundation, operates a food distribution service six days a week; and as Christmas approaches, it donates enough cooking ingredients to last one or two weeks to those in need, which for many can mean the difference between survival and hardship during the difficult winter months.
Relief efforts will continue through the end of December in Somogy, Heves, and Hajdú-Bihar counties, as well as in the capital, providing assistance to our fellow citizens in need at a total of 25 different locations nationwide.
Heartwarming
A festive food distribution program like this does more than just fill stomachs; it means much more than simply putting food on the tables of the hungry—it also brings hearts closer together. Given the nature of the event, those most in need—not only physically but also spiritually—are given the opportunity for personal connection, conversation, and the chance to experience what it means to receive care and concern from others, and to experience love. This experience is a tremendous treasure, one that even we, ordinary people, often lack.
We are all part of one big family. So let’s show consideration and care for our fellow human beings, and if we can, let’s also provide financial support to those in need!
