The members of the food distribution mission got up early. The temperature drops to 2 degrees at night, so once the cooking cauldrons were fired up, the work was downright pleasant. Following the military’s recommendation, our food distributors set up camp south of Antakya, in a suburb, since violence is rampant in more central areas.
The men served 400 portions for breakfast to the local population—they are serving more than 1,000 plates daily. They served hot lentil soup, cheese, bread, and olives, in keeping with local tradition. This area was hit hardest by the earthquake: practically all buildings were damaged, and many collapsed completely. People are immensely grateful for the help. The joint mission of Hungarian and Turkish Hare Krishna devotees plans to distribute several thousand portions of nutritious meals.
The team serves meals twice a day; after breakfast is distributed, they begin preparing dinner, which is served at 4:30 p.m. Aftershocks were still being felt in the Kahramanmaraş region as recently as yesterday. The confirmed death toll has now surpassed 34,000, so the local population is in desperate need of all available international aid.
