New food distribution centre inaugurated

After nearly four years of construction work, a new vegetarian food distribution centre was inaugurated in Budapest. The facility is not only unique in Hungary, but also worldwide: as a vegetarian soup kitchen, it can play a unique role in supporting people in need.

The new centre is Food for Life programme which has been providing hot meals to people in difficult circumstances for many years. The investment is intended to enable the organisation to carry out its charitable work more efficiently, in more modern conditions and with greater capacity.

Ceremonial handover in Budapest

The event was attended by all those who have steadfastly supported the project over the years. Some have contributed financially, others with physical work, administrative help or organisational support to make the new food distribution centre a reality.

Among those present were Dr. László Kiss, Mayor of Óbuda-Békásmegyer, Gábor Kerpel-Fronius deputy mayor, Attila Szanyi-Karl, Head of Institution and Senior Pastor of the Krishna Church, Sivarama Swami is. In their speeches, all of them praised the results of the collaboration and thanked those who have supported the food distribution for years.

New centre inaugurated in Vaisnava tradition

The initiation ceremony followed the Vaishnava tradition. The event began with a fire ceremony, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The ribbon was cut by the Mayor of Óbuda, the Deputy Mayor, the Head of the Institution, Attila Szanyi-Karl and Swami Sivarama.

The purpose of the ceremony was to ensure that the purpose of the building and the service of its staff was a fitting link to the charitable mission of the Food for Life programme.

Capable of preparing up to ten thousand meals a day

At the opening ceremony, guests were able to see the new kitchen, the state-of-the-art refrigeration system and the modern equipment. The capacity of the new food distribution centre is a major improvement: the facility can serve up to to prepare ten thousand portions of food per day also suitable for.

This is particularly important as the Food for Life programme regularly distributes food to people in need, families, the elderly and those in difficult circumstances. The new infrastructure will allow the help to reach even more people.

Vegan bean goulash for the guests

As part of the celebrations, guests were treated to a standing reception where they could sample one of the programme's signature dishes, vegan bean goulash. This is the dish that Food for Life also offers regularly at its food distributions.

The event included a short screening that gave an insight into the complex activities of Food for Life. After the presentation, participants were given a personal tour of the new facility.

Made possible by donors and one per cent pledges

The project would not have been possible without the dedication, donations and perseverance of our supporters. The one per cent personal income tax donations collected over the years have also played a key role.

Special thanks go to all those who year after year give their trust and support to the food distribution. The creation of the new centre is the result of a concerted effort based on long-term commitment, service and social responsibility.

A historic step in food distribution

Although the full move is still to be completed, the foundations of the new vegetarian food distribution centre are already in place. The Budapest facility could open a new chapter in the history of charitable food distribution in Hungary.

The new centre is not just a kitchen or a logistics base, but a service space designed to provide tangible help to thousands of people every day.
